According to research by Dragonpass, 19 per cent of women worldwide are now opting for solo holidays to reset and recharge. It’s clear that many female travellers are eager to explore the world independently.
However, travelling alone does have its drawbacks, particularly when it comes to safety. Not all destinations offer the same level of security, making destination choice especially important.
Drawing on individual testimonies, the Georgetown University Women, Peace and Security Index, and the Institute for Economics and Peace Global Peace Index, the BBC highlights five standout destinations noted for their safety for female solo travellers.

Visitors frequently praise its welcoming atmosphere, abundance of small-group tours and the kindness of local people - factors that make it particularly appealing for solo travellers.
Caitlin Limmer, from Twickenham, embarked on a solo cycling adventure across Vietnam in 2022. Her days were spent covering long distances by bike, punctuated by regular breaks, refreshment stops and cultural experiences. She said the journey helped her reconnect with herself.

Online, travellers echo similar sentiments. One Reddit user described Vietnam as “super safe”, “stunning” and “welcoming”, adding that it is easy to navigate thanks to its well-established tourist infrastructure. Another noted that the country feels “peaceful”, “friendly” and “well organised”.
